Margaux Lafond and the Wonderment
At Cartier’s London showroom, a series of cave-like spaces alternate between inky and luminous, the former likely rendering viewers with a feeling of what it would have felt like for them to behold the jewels unearthed for the first time and the later a contrasting experience of otherworldly lightness. Both of which transport us to a world of fantasy, successfully conveying the nature of our relationship with the stones - one of wonderment.
Interior Designer Margaux Lafond shows a natural understanding of how to employ design principles to create iconic design experiences - from a scene stealing Japanese maple that provides the volume and texture to get your eye roaming to the use of ritual and procession to reinforce storytelling, her projects sing with a well-tuned voice.
Born and raised in Paris, France, Lafond has flourished in a variety of scales and works - from custom furniture design and fabrication to exhibition design to residential and commercial interiors in Paris and NYC and has collaborated with powerhouse outfits like Gilles & Boissier, ASH NYC and Rafael de Cardenas.
Personally, I’m drawn to her deft execution of materiality. With Detroit’s Siren Hotel, I see a taut balance of historical detail, contemporary perspective and flirtatious charm.
And I can’t wait to see what she does next.
